Surgery Center

Our primary objective at Central Maine Orthopaedics (CMO) is to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to the people we serve. To that end, we offer a fully integrated team approach to caring for our patients and provide an ambulatory surgery center (ASC), complete with two operating suites. And, we are able to deliver the same high standard of care you’d expect to find in a major metropolitan area right here in Maine.

CMO is one of the largest outpatient orthopaedic facilities in New England. We are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for meeting nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality healthcare. Our surgery center is the only licensed independent surgical center in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
Because of advances in medical technology and pain management, many surgical procedures can now be done on an outpatient basis. This means a patient can go home in a matter of hours. As an ambulatory surgery center, CMO can provide a more personalized, cost efficient, and less stressful experience.

We perform about 2000 surgeries a year in our surgery center. Typical surgeries done here are day surgeries, including arthroscopic, hand and foot, and ACL procedures; injections; and hardware removal.

Surgeries are scheduled five days a week between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

What to expect if you are having outpatient surgery at CMO

  1. Surgery center staff will call you before your surgery to remind you of any pre-surgery instructions and tell you what time to arrive at the center.
  2. The average wait time for anyone who chooses to accompany you for your surgery is one to three hours. We offer a comfortable, friendly environment where they can sit with you while you are receiving preoperative care.
  3. Anesthesia used for outpatient surgery is tailored to make your experience safe and pleasant and allow you to go home as soon as possible after your procedure. We use short-acting anesthetic drugs and specialized anesthetic techniques and focus specifically on each patient’s needs.
  4. After your procedure you can expect to be in the recovery area for about one hour. The surgery center boasts a lot of natural light, which we believe helps our patients heal.
  5. Once you go home, surgery center staff will call you to see how you are doing and to respond to any questions or concerns.
