What is an orthopaedic surgeon?

An orthopaedic surgeon specializes in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves.

While all Central Maine Orthopaedic surgeons are familiar with all aspects of the musculoskeletal system, each has specialized in certain areas, such as the foot and ankle, spine, hip, hand, shoulder, knee, joint replacement, or sports medicine.

Education and training

An orthopaedic surgeon is a medical doctor with extensive training in the proper diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. To become a surgeon, he or she must complete up to 15 years of post-high school formal education:

  • Four years of study in a college or university
  • Four years of study in medical school
  • Five years of study in orthopaedic residency at a major medical center
  • Optional one to two years of specialized education (fellowship)

Why choose Central Maine Orthopaedics?

All Central Maine Orthopaedics (CMO) surgeons are required to demonstrate a mastery of orthopaedic knowledge by passing both oral and written examinations given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
