Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM)

In 2010, CMO partnered with Central Maine Medical Center to build and develop the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM). Located in a newly renovated, totally dedicated unit within Central Maine Medical Center, equipped with its own private rooms, the OICM offers a comprehensive approach to care for orthopaedic inpatients. For patients who need to be admitted to the hospital for their orthopaedic procedure, OICM provides a full continuum of care, from initial assessment and diagnosis through surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Care is provided by CMO surgeons and complemented by a multi-disciplinary team of orthopaedic specialists. Learn more about OICM.

Maine Spinecare

Founded by Central Maine Orthopaedics, Maine Spinecare is a spine center of excellence that aims to bring the care and service to Central Maine that a patient would find in larger markets, such as Boston and New York. The program combines the expertise of multiple spine specialists in a single location to improve patient care. Working under our medical director and spine surgeon, Dr. Michael Regan, staffing includes nonsurgical spine specialists, Dr. John Guernelli, Dr. Adam Owen, and Dr. Doug Pavlak, and a team of physical therapists. Facilities include X-ray, MRI, and our day surgery center.

Statistics show that four out of five Americans will suffer from acute back pain in their lifetime. Unfortunately, even with the scientific advances in diagnosis and treatment over the last twenty years, the medical treatment that back pain sufferers receive is often ineffective. Many patients still experience multiple referrals, excessive diagnostic studies, and, at times, inappropriate procedures.

That is why CMO created Maine Spinecare. Studies show that 80 percent of back-pain sufferers benefit from conservative treatment, which includes a dedicated physical therapy program designed to address back pain problems. Another 10 to 15 percent of back pain patients may benefit from injection therapy, and only 5 to 10 percent may need surgical intervention.
