Dr. Matthew Bush named President; Dr. Paul Cain to serve as Chairman of the Board

AUBURN, ME – After five years at the helm, Dr. Paul Cain has decided to step down as President of Central Maine Orthopaedics (CMO), but will remain as Chairman of the Board and co-chair of CMO’s Risk Management Committee. Taking Dr. Cain’s place will be Dr. Matthew Bush. The CMO board of directors announced in October that Dr. Bush would assume the organization’s presidency at the end of the month.

During Cain’s tenure as president, Michael H. Cox, Ph.D. was named CEO of CMO, two new partners were added to the practice (Drs. Jeffrey Bush and Matthew Bush), the annual number of day-surgery cases increased by over 31 percent, and conversions to new practice management and electronic health record systems were implemented. Dr. Cain led the development of the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM); a state-of-the-art and leading edge inpatient orthopaedic center at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) that is producing patient outcomes that are among the nation’s best. In addition, Maine Spinecare, the only comprehensive spine center in Maine, was opened to meet the regional and state patient need. Other CMO programs developed under Dr. Cain’s presidency include podiatry and family practice sports medicine. Internally, CMO launched a comprehensive wellness program, giving employees the opportunity to lead healthier lives and enhance their work life experience. CMO has also expanded their operations by adding orthopaedic specialty clinics at Rumford and Bridgton hospitals.

Since the inception of the Sports Medicine program at Central Maine Orthopaedics in 1987, Dr. Cain has grown it into a comprehensive program, including preventative programs, community educational seminars, game coverage and team involvement with local area high schools. Additionally, Dr. Cain is the team physician for Bates College and was the team physician for the Lewiston MAINEiacs.

Dr. Cain is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with varied areas of specialty, including sports medicine, arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder and knee, knee ligament reconstruction and cartilage restoration. He joined Central Maine Orthopaedics in 1987 and is the senior partner at CMO.

Dr. Cain serves on the medical staff at Central Maine Medical Center, Rumford Hospital courtesy medical staff and Bridgton Hospital consulting medical staff. He performs surgery at CMMC in the Orthopaedic Institute of Central Maine (OICM), St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and CMO’s Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Dr. Matthew Bush was voted unanimously by his peers to take over the role of board president. He is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery. He uses the latest techniques and technology (including reverse shoulder joint replacement) to restore proper mobility and function and eliminate pain. He joined CMO in the summer of 2006 along with his brother Jeffrey Bush, who is also a CMO physician and surgeon.

Dr. Bush is carrying on the family tradition as a third generation orthopaedic surgeon. His grandfather, Leonard F. Bush, founded the orthopaedics department at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, where the Bush pavilion is named in his honor. Moreover, this father, David C. Bush, was a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon at Geisinger. Dr. Bush serves on the medical staff at Central Maine Medical Center, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Bridgton Hospital. He performs surgery at the CMMC in the OICM, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and CMO’s Ambulatory Surgery Center. He is also available for consultation at Bridgton Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Bush served as the medical director of the CMO Compliance Committee for the past two years, and was instrumental in the conversion to the electronic health records system.
